When Is the Best Time to Visit Sunny Beach?
For good weather and fewer crowds, I would choose June or September. The resort is fully in summer mode but you avoid the intensity of July and August. The sea is warm enough to swim in.
For couples and adults without school-holiday restrictions, September can be particularly attractive.
The peak season is July and August, so you can expect hot weather, busy beaches, and plenty of nightlife. We stayed at this time and booked our hotel in advance, as they get very busy and it can be hard to find a good fit at a good price.
My recommendation: For the best balance between summer weather and avoiding the busiest period, I’d choose September. For families tied to school holidays, July and August are still perfectly workable (this is what we did) — just go in expecting Sunny Beach to be busy.
Where Should You Stay in Sunny Beach?
Before booking anything, this is probably the most important thing to understand.
Sunny Beach isn’t a small Bulgarian town that happens to have a beach. It is a large tourist resort built around holidays, so where you stay matters.
Northern Sunny Beach — The northern end heads towards Sveti Vlas.

My family and I stayed in this area because it’s slightly removed from the busiest central parts of the resort and we preferred quieter evenings when traveling as a family. We were looking for a resort atmosphere without being right in the middle of everything and it worked very well for us.
Central Sunny Beach — There’s always something happening here.
One of Bulgaria’s most popular and vibrant coastal areas. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, shops, fine sand, shallow waters and a bustling nightlife. The downside is obvious: it’s also the part most likely to feel busy and noisy.
We walked around here when we caught the ferry to Nessebar. In the morning, you could sit in a bar for a coffee to start your day. I really liked the atmosphere but I wouldn’t recommend this area with kids.

Southern Sunny Beach — The southern end heads towards the charming city of Nessebar
The southern end is closer to Nessebar and can be a good option if you want easier access to the historic town. During the day, it is calmer than central Sunny Beach but at night, there are open-air parties at the popular Cocoa Beach Club. I would stay here with friends who want to party at night and relax all day afterwards.
My advice: Don’t just search for “Sunny Beach hotel”. Look at exactly where the hotel is on the map.
My recommended hotel shortlist

Booking prices change substantially by season and occupancy.
Northern Sunny Beach
Harmony Suites Jungle – Family Friendly Complex (Budget)
Best for families who want more space and a kitchenette without paying mid-range prices. Its family rooms, playground and quiet garden setting make it an easy, good-value base a short walk from the beach.
DIT Evrika Beach Club Hotel (Mid-Range)
Best for families who want an easy, all-inclusive stay away from the central noise. With its own aquapark, five restaurants and a private beach, kids are entertained without leaving the property.

We’ve stayed here and loved it, read my complete DIT Evrika Beach Club Hotel review.
Helena Park (Luxury)
Best for families or couples who want five-star comfort right on the sand in the calmer north end. Beachfront gardens, a spa and multiple pools make it feel worlds away from the central strip.
Central Sunny Beach
Hotel Central (Budget)
Best for travellers who want to be in the middle of everything and don’t mind trading polish for location. It’s genuinely walkable to the beach, bars and restaurants.
Meliá Sunny Beach (Mid-Range)
Best for families and groups who want a big, reliable all-inclusive right in the heart of the resort. It’s huge but well-run with a strong reputation for value given the level of food and facilities on offer.
Barceló Royal Beach (Luxury)
Best for couples and groups who want five-star polish without leaving the centre of the action. Its spa, flower-shaped pool and beachfront location make it one of the most complete luxury stays in Sunny Beach.
Southern Sunny Beach
Hotel Aktinia (Budget)
Best for travellers who want easy access to Cacao Beach Club and Nessebar without central-strip prices. It sits among the southern dunes, close to the beach and a short hop from the old town.
Festa Panorama Hotel (Mid-Range)
Best for couples who want to walk to Old Nessebar while still being close to Sunny Beach. Its sea-view rooms and quieter southern setting make it feel more relaxed than a typical mid-range resort.
Villa Maria Revas (Luxury)
Best for couples wanting an intimate, boutique alternative to the big resort hotels. Its unique architecture and southwest location near Nessebar’s old town set it apart from the busier central luxury properties — just note it’s a smaller villa-style stay rather than a sprawling resort.
How to get to Sunny Beach from Burgas
For most international visitors, Burgas Airport is the obvious airport to look at.
Here’s a quick comparison of the four main ways to travel from Burgas Airport to Sunny Beach:
| Option | Approx. time | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 30–45 min | ~40€ | Families & convenience |
| Taxi | 30–45 min | ~40€ | Last-minute arrivals |
| Bus | 45–60+ min | 3€ | Budget travellers |
| Rental car | 30–45 min | from ~89€ for 5 days | Exploring Bulgaria |
Journey times and prices can vary, so check current information before travelling.
As we were traveling with children and arriving late, we booked a transfer in advance. We usually take the bus when we travel. However this time I booked a private transfer because the local bus system can be a bit complicated and they don’t run at night.
What Are the Best Things to Do in Sunny Beach?
For us, Sunny Beach was all about having an easy holiday, unwinding by the sea and having fun with the kids.
Aside from relaxing at the beach, we explored the historic town of Nessebar, which I highly recommend, and strolled along the promenade in the evenings. Since our hotel featured its own on-site aquapark, we didn’t feel the need to venture elsewhere—it was just so convenient!
To help you plan your trip, here are the best activities to choose from, depending on your travel style.
Visit Nessebar
Nessebar was the highlight of our sightseeing during the trip. After several days spent moving between the hotel, the aquapark and the beach. Walking through the old town felt like stepping into a completely different Bulgaria. We wandered through its charming old streets, saw the historic churches and traditional houses and enjoyed the views over the Black Sea.

It’s one of the easiest ways to add some history and culture to a Sunny Beach holiday without travelling far.
Pro Tip: Go in the morning for fewer crowds and while the kids aren’t tired yet.
I could have easily spent a full day there but since we were with kids, we only spent a half day in Nessebar—which was plenty of time to see the main sights.
Take a Catamaran Tour on the Black Sea
A catamaran trip is a great choice when you want a break from the busy resort but still want to enjoy the sea. There are several options for half-day and full-day cruises as well.
I suggest booking one in advance, especially in July and August, as they can fill up early. I wasn’t sure which day we would go, so I didn’t book any upfront. In the end, we didn’t go because the only day I could find an available spot was our last day and I didn’t want to complicate the logistics right before heading home.
Try Some Water Sports
Sunny Beach has plenty of water sports to try. These are probably more appealing to teenagers, couples and groups of friends than to families with toddlers.
Have Dinner at Khan’s Tent
For something a little different, head up to Khan’s Tent for dinner and the view.
Perched above Sunny Beach, it offers panoramic views over the resort and the Black Sea. The combination of dinner, entertainment and the evening view makes it more of an experience than simply going out for a meal.
Spend a Day at Aquapark Nessebar or Action Aquapark
If our hotel hadn’t had an on-site aquapark, this is where we would have definitely gone.
There are slides, pools, and attractions for different ages, so it’s a good option when the kids have had enough of the beach — or when you simply want to do something more active together.
Here is a direct comparison between the two water parks to help you decide which one is best for you:
| Feature | Action Aquapark (Sunny Beach) | Aquapark Nessebar (Aqua Paradise) |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Central area of Sunny Beach resort | Border of Nessebar / Ravda (by the main road) |
| Size | Smaller, more compact layout | The largest water park in Bulgaria (~55,000 m²) |
| Number of Slides | Around 30 attractions | 38 slides (approx. 60 total attractions) |
| Extreme Slides | Fewer, but includes classic high-speed drops | Massive selection of high-adrenaline and extreme slides |
| Special Features | On-site mini zoo / animal farm | Surf simulator and castle-themed pools |
| Best For | Families with younger kids, relaxing half-day trips | Thrill-seekers, teenagers, and full-day adventures |
| Navigation | Easy to walk around, quickly covers all areas | Huge territory, requires a full-day visit to experience |
Walk Along the Promenade
One of the simplest things to do in Sunny Beach is to walk along the promenade in the evenings. After dinner, we went for a walk and we really enjoyed the atmosphere.
The resort is lively at night, with restaurants, bars, shops, ice-cream stands and entertainment. There were plenty of activities for the kids, from small games to sweet treats.

Be aware that all kinds of toys are displayed along the way—we couldn’t leave without a new Labubu and a ball.
How Much Does Sunny Beach Cost
Sunny Beach is one of the most affordable beach resort providing an excelent value for money ratio compared to other Western European destinactions.

Sunny Beach Travel FAQs
Final Thoughts
Sunny Beach doesn’t always have a great reputation but if you know what kind of holiday you are looking for and choose where to stay carefully, you can have a fantastic holiday here.
We had a wonderful time during our 5-day trip and could fully unwind. That was partly thanks to our amazing place to stay and also because we didn’t pack our itinerary fully. We visited Nessebar, which was very charming and I would highly recommend not leaving it out.
I hope this guide can help you plan your perfect holiday in Sunny Beach and you will have a holiday worth to remember for a long time.
